Save Up to 7% on Every Fill-Up
If you own a car or bike in India, fuel is probably one of your biggest monthly expenses. At current prices, filling up a sedan costs โน4,000 to โน6,000, and a heavy commuter might spend โน8,000 to โน12,000 per month. Over a year, that’s โน50,000 to โน1.5 lakh going straight to the petrol pump.
Most credit cards treat fuel as a “low-margin” category and exclude it from rewards entirely. But a handful of cards are specifically designed for fuel spends, and the savings are significant โ up to 7% per transaction if you pick the right one.
Here’s the thing though: fuel cards are brand-specific. An HPCL card won’t help you at a BPCL pump. So the first question isn’t “which fuel card is best?” โ it’s “which petrol station do you actually go to?”
If You Fill Up at BPCL / Bharat Petroleum
BPCL SBI Card Octane is your best bet. It gives you 25X reward points at BPCL stations (effectively 6.25% value back), plus a 1% fuel surcharge waiver, taking the total saving to roughly 7.25% on every BPCL fill-up.
The card costs โน1,499 per year but gives you 6,000 welcome reward points (worth โน1,500) on joining โ so the first year is essentially free. The 25X earning is capped at 2,500 reward points per billing cycle, which means it maxes out at around โน10,000 in BPCL fuel spend per month. For most car owners, that’s plenty.
The catch? Zero benefit at IndianOil or HP stations. If your regular pump is BPCL, this card is a no-brainer. If not, keep reading.
If You Fill Up at IndianOil
You have two choices here.
IndianOil Kotak Credit Card gives you 24 Turbo Points per โน150 at IndianOil stations โ about 4% effective value back. The annual fee is just โน449 (often waived for the first year), and the fuel surcharge waiver cap is a generous โน3,500 per year. It also gives 8X on groceries and dining, making it a decent secondary card.
IndianOil HDFC Bank Credit Card takes a different approach with its “Fuel SmartPay” feature โ you get 50X FuelPoints when you pay via the SmartPay method at IndianOil stations, translating to roughly 5% value back. The card is โน500 per year with a โน50,000 spend waiver.
Between the two, the Kotak card is simpler (no SmartPay workaround needed), while the HDFC card offers a higher earning rate if you’re willing to use the SmartPay feature every time.
If You Fill Up at HPCL / Hindustan Petroleum
ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver gives you 6 reward points per โน100 at HPCL (about 5% effective when combined with the surcharge waiver and additional discount). It also earns 4X on groceries and utility bills. At just โน500 per year with a โน50,000 waiver, it’s an affordable pick.
The Smart Fuel Strategy
Here’s what seasoned credit card users do: they keep a dedicated fuel card for their regular petrol pump brand and use a separate everyday card for all other spending. The fuel card handles the 4 to 7% fuel saving, and the everyday card maximises rewards on dining, shopping, and bills.
It sounds like overkill, but the maths works. If you spend โน6,000 per month on fuel, a 5% dedicated fuel card saves you โน3,600 per year โ more than enough to justify carrying an extra card.
