There’s something deeply satisfying about walking past the crowded departure gate, flashing your credit card at a lounge entrance, and settling into a quiet corner with free food and WiFi. Airport lounges used to be reserved for business class passengers. Today, a โน500 credit card can get you in.
But lounge access in India has become complicated. Banks keep changing the rules โ adding spend conditions, reducing the number of free visits, switching lounge networks, and sometimes quietly removing the benefit altogether. Here’s what you actually need to know in 2026.
How Credit Card Lounge Access Works
DreamFolks handles the majority of domestic lounge access for Indian banks. When your card says “domestic lounge access,” it almost always means DreamFolks lounges. You walk in, show your card (or a digital voucher via the DreamFolks app), and you’re in.
Priority Pass is the global network for international lounges. Cards that offer “international lounge access” typically provide a Priority Pass membership. The membership itself is free, but whether your actual lounge visits are free depends on your card โ some charge USD 27 to 35 per visit despite giving you the membership.
Diners Club has its own lounge network, primarily for HDFC Diners Club cards. The network is smaller than DreamFolks but overlaps with many major airports.
The Spend Condition Trap
This is the biggest change in 2026. Almost every bank now requires you to spend a certain amount before unlocking lounge access. The days of “get the card, get the lounge” are largely over.
No spend condition (truly free): HDFC Diners Club Black Metal gives unlimited domestic and international lounge access with zero spend requirements โ even for add-on cardholders. ICICI Emeralde Private Metal is also exempt. But both are super-premium cards with โน10,000+ annual fees.
โน10,000 monthly spend: AU Bank Altura (1 domestic per quarter), YES FIRST Preferred (2 domestic per quarter). Very achievable for most working professionals.
โน20,000 monthly spend: IDFC FIRST Select (2 domestic per quarter), Standard Chartered Ultimate (1 domestic + 1 international per month). Still reasonable.
โน30,000 monthly spend: IDFC FIRST Wealth (unlimited domestic + 4 international per year). Higher bar but incredible value for a lifetime free card.
โน75,000 quarterly spend: ICICI Sapphiro (4 domestic per quarter), ICICI Rubyx (2 domestic per quarter), Kotak Royale Signature (2 domestic + 1 international per quarter). This is โน25,000 per month โ a significant commitment.
Best Lounge Cards by Budget
Free cards with lounge access: IDFC FIRST Select is hard to beat โ lifetime free, 2 domestic lounges per quarter on โน20,000 monthly spend. IDFC FIRST Wealth goes further with unlimited domestic lounges on โน30,000 monthly spend, but needs โน3 lakh monthly income to qualify.
Under โน1,000 per year: YES FIRST Exclusive at โน999 gives unlimited domestic lounge access and 2 international visits per year. At this price, that’s exceptional value.
Under โน5,000 per year: SBI Card ELITE at โน4,999 gives 8 domestic + 6 international visits. AU Bank Zenith+ at โน4,999 gives a massive 16 domestic + 16 international visits with 0.99% forex markup.
Super-premium (โน10,000+): HDFC Diners Club Black Metal at โน10,000 and YES Bank Marquee at โน9,999 both offer unlimited domestic lounge access for primary AND add-on cardholders โ rare at any price.
Common Lounge Gotchas
“Complimentary Priority Pass” doesn’t mean free lounges. American Express Platinum Travel gives you a Priority Pass membership, but charges USD 35 per visit. You’re paying for the privilege of being allowed to pay.
Guest charges add up. Most cards cover only the primary cardholder. Bringing a companion costs โน500 to โน2,000 per visit. If you travel with family, look for cards that extend access to add-on cardholders (HDFC Diners Black Metal, YES Marquee).
Lounge quality varies wildly. The Plaza Premium lounge at Delhi T3 is a completely different experience from the small lounge at a regional airport. Don’t expect consistency across airports.
Quarterly vs monthly spend conditions reset. If you need โน75,000 quarterly spend and you spent โน74,000 โ tough luck, no lounge next quarter. Track your spending.
The Honest Take
If you fly more than 4 times a year domestically, a card with lounge access pays for itself in comfort and saved food costs alone. A single lounge visit is worth โน800 to โน1,500 in food and drinks. Four visits a year is โน3,200 to โน6,000 in value.
But if you fly once or twice a year, don’t get a card primarily for lounge access. The spend conditions and annual fees rarely justify it. Get a good cashback or rewards card instead, and pay for lounge access on the rare occasions you need it โ most lounges charge โน800 to โน1,200 for walk-in entry.
